  53.       We are constantly thinking of ways to improve our customer support.
  54.       Several suggestions have been made about making updates more readily
  55.       available.  In the past, the only way to get an update would be to
  56.       request it from us at a $15 cost (which, by the way, barely covers
  57.       our costs on duplication of diskettes, packaging, shipping,
  58.       invoicing, etc).

  60.       Having thought about it for a long time, we decided to build patch
  61.       files for all of our toolkits.  We are making these available for
  62.       download on our BBS and on CompuServe at no extra charge.  This should
  63.       be good news for many of our customers.

  65.       If you do not have a modem, you can still request our sales department
  66.       to send you the patch disk for $15 plus shipping and handling.

  69. General information about the patches

  72.       There is a batch files accompanying this read.me file:

  74.         UPDATE30.BAT
  75.  
  76.       The UPDATE30.BAT file patches any Genus Toolkit after the release of
  77.       GX Kernel v3.00, which started shipping with PCX Programmer's Toolkit
  78.       v6.00, GIF Programmer's Toolkit v1.50, GX Printer v1.50, and GX Text
  79.       v3.00.  GX Graphics v3.00 was shipped with GX Kernel v3.01.

  81.       The following list displays the packages this batch file will generate:

  91.       Remember that your serial number(s) do not change for a minor update.
  92.       So you keep the numbers that were originally shipped when you first
  93.       purchased the product.

  95.       As you may have noticed, we do not provide patches for major
  96.       upgrades.  These are still available through our sales department.

  99. Do you have all the files?
  100. --------------------------

  102.       If you downloaded the patches, make sure you have all the files you
  103.       need.  The naming convention is the first 2 letters of the package
  104.       (GX, TX, FX, PX, PR, GF, GR).  The following 3 digits are the
  105.       patch's target version number.  The last letter in the filename
  106.       (extension excluded) determines whether the patch is for source (S),
  107.       protected mode (P) or libraries (L).  The filename extension should
  108.       always be .RTP.  Keep in mind that the patches will only patch from
  109.       one version below the target version.  This means that depending on
  110.       what version you have and which one you want to end up with, you
  111.       might or might not need more than one patch file.

  113.       So, if you want to patch the libraries GX Text v3.00 to v3.03, you
  114.       will need the following files:
  115.  
  116.         TX301L.RTP
  117.         TX302L.RTP
  118.         TX303L.RTP
  119.  
  120.       Whereas, if you want to patch the source for PCX Programmer's Toolkit
  121.       v6.00 to v6.01, you only need PCX601S.RTP.

  123.       Remember that you also need the .RTPatch PATCH.EXE from PocketSoft
  124.       v2.01.  If you downloaded the patches, this utility can be downloaded
  125.       from our BBS or from the Genus forum on CompuServe.

  128. Patching the Genus libraries and source
  129. ---------------------------------------

  131.       If you type the name of the batch file (UPDATE30.BAT) with no
  132.       parameters, it will display the syntax you can use to patch your
  133.       libraries.
  134.  
  135.       The patches were built from the original diskettes and we assumed the
  136.       default directory structure we have in the installation program.
  137.       We accepted all the defaults and we installed all the language
  138.       interfaces, example programs, include files, utilities, etc.
  139.  
  140.       What this means is that you MUST reinstall the original package using
  141.       the default directory structure if you changed the directory
  142.       structure.  In addition, if you did not install all language
  143.       interfaces, examples, etc, you will get warning messages from
  144.       PATCH.EXE for those missing files  -- this is OK.

  147. Examples using UPDATE30.BAT

  150.       If you want to patch the PCX Programmer's Toolkit source v6.00 to
  151.       v6.01, you would type the following:

  155.       If you want to patch the Text Toolkit real mode libraries v3.00 to
  156.       v3.01, you would type the following:

  160.       If you want to patch the Printer Toolkit protected mode libraries
  161.       v1.50 to v1.51, you would type the following:

  170.       directory structure in the installation program.

  184. Testing the new patched product

  187.       The easiest way to confirm that the product was patched correctly
  188.       is to recompile, link and run the example programs.  If you are not
  189.       successful in doing this, here are some suggestions you might want
  190.       to follow:

  192.         [1] Make sure that you do not have any extra copies of the libraries
  193.             or header files in your hard disk.  If you do, delete the
  194.             duplicates.
  195.  
  196.         [2] Update your environment variables, your directories options, or
  197.             your make files to reference the new files.

  199.         [3] If the above do not work.  Try applying the patch again.
